5 Things to Know Before Donating Your First Item

You've decided to donate something through Adalwin. Maybe it's a bookshelf you've been meaning to get rid of, or a phone that works perfectly but sits in a drawer since you upgraded. Either way — welcome. Here are five things that'll make your first donation smooth.

1. Be Honest About Condition

This is the single most important thing. Adalwin's trust system is built on accurate descriptions. If your chair has a wobbly leg, say so. If your laptop's battery only lasts an hour, mention it. Recipients appreciate honesty far more than surprises.

We use four condition levels: Excellent (like new), Good (fully functional, minor wear), Fair (works but shows age), and Needs Repair (fixable issues). Most items fall under "Good" — and that's perfectly fine.

2. Clean It Before You List It

This sounds obvious, but it matters more than you think. A clean item photographs better, verifies faster, and — most importantly — signals respect. You're not discarding something. You're passing it on. Wipe down surfaces, remove personal stickers, clear out drawers. Ten minutes of cleaning makes a real difference.

3. Photos Make or Break Your Listing

Take at least three clear photos in good lighting:

  • One full shot of the item
  • One close-up of any wear, damage, or labels
  • One showing the item in context (to give a sense of size)

Natural daylight works best. Avoid flash — it washes out details. If the item has a flaw, photograph it. Transparency builds trust, and trust gets your item matched faster.

4. Set a Realistic Pickup Window

When you list an item, you'll set a pickup preference — whether a volunteer or recipient can come to collect, or you'd prefer to drop it off at a designated point. If you choose pickup, give at least a 3-4 hour window over a weekend. Verification volunteers and delivery volunteers work around their own schedules, so flexibility helps everyone.

Pro tip: if you're in Pune or Mumbai, Saturday mornings are when most pickups happen.

5. You'll Get Updates — Read Them

After listing, here's what happens:

  1. A volunteer is assigned to verify your item (usually within 48 hours)
  2. After verification, your item enters the matching pool
  3. When matched, you'll get a notification with pickup/delivery details
  4. After delivery, you'll see a confirmation and (if the recipient opts in) a photo of the item in its new home

Each step triggers a notification. Keep an eye on them — occasionally we'll need you to confirm a pickup time or clarify something about the item.

That's it. Five things. The whole listing process takes under three minutes, and the feeling of seeing your old mixer grinder in someone's kitchen? That lasts considerably longer. Ready to list your first item?
